It is very important for any kidney patient and dialysis patient to reduce and limit sodium in his food which we call it low sodium diet.

To do that we need to follow the following steps:

  1. The labels tell you how much sodium is in each serving. Make sure that you look at the serving size.
  2. Do not add salt to your food. Avoid foods that list salt, sodium, or monosodium glutamate (MSG) as an ingredient.
  3. Ease into it. If you don’t feel you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time.
  4. Limit processed foods, fast food, and restaurant foods. These types of food are very high in sodium.
  5. Avoid salted pretzels, chips, and other salted snacks.
  6. Avoid smoked, cured, salted, and canned meat, fish, and poultry. This includes, tuna, sardine, hot dogs, and luncheon meats.
  7. Use herbs, spices, and low-salt flavor enhancers in place of salt.
